THE SUBWAY OR NOTHING CROWD IS AT IT AGAIN

THIS TIME THEY WANT TO CANCEL THE FINCH AND SHEPPARD LRTS.

Sheppard-Map

There was a motion before Council to cancel the Finch and Sheppard LRTs and replace the Sheppard LRT with a subway.  On Thursday, February 12, 2015 Council voted to refer the motion to their Executive Committee. Now it must be approved by the Executive Committee before Council will consider it again.

Thanks to all you TTCriders out there who signed our petition. In just two short days, over 900 of you sent a strong message to Council  to build the Sheppard and Finch LRTs, without further delay.  The overwhelming support for these projects will go a long way toward ensuring we get the rapid transit we deserve.

But we still need to keep the pressure on  Toronto councillors. We don’t want members of their Executive Committee to forget their promise to bring rapid transit to riders in Finch and Malvern.  Please sign our petition here.

Both of these approved, funded LRT lines will bring much needed rapid transit to neighbourhoods in Malvern, Jane and Finch and Humber College. A vote for a subway along Sheppard does not guarantee anything. There is no funding in place for a subway. Even if there was, it would be a much shorter line with fewer stops. We can’t  let that happen.

U of T professor, David Hulchanski’s, “Three Cities” update  shows that the gap between the rich and the poor in Toronto is widening, with many low income families relegated to “transit deserts” in North East and North West Toronto.

The need to bring rapid transit to these neighbourhoods echoed by York University Geography professor, Valerie Preston:

“If you bring a social justice perspective then it looks to me … that you really should emphasize the Finch LRT and the Sheppard LRT because those are the routes that bring the most service to the lowest income and largest minority population,”

It is simply unacceptable for riders in these areas to be stuck with bus service for another twenty years. They deserve a rapid transit network that connects to neighbourhoods  across Scarborough and North West Toronto.

We are asking Toronto City Council to support the Sheppard and Finch LRTs. If you haven’t already done so, please take a moment to sign our petition

TTCriders is  working hard to make sure we get the rapid transit we deserve. To get involved, email us at scarboroughtransitaction@gmail.com
