Building Rapid Transit for Scarborough
Scarborough residents love our part of the city! We want our neighbourhoods and communities to thrive. As we’re home to some of Toronto's poorest neighbourhoods with the highest number of racialized people and rates of unemployment, we need a modern and comfortable rapid transit system that connects us to each other and the rest of the city. A single subway line won’t do this. We need a comprehensive rapid transit network for ALL of Scarborough.
A publicly-built, owned, operated and maintained Scarborough Rapid Transit Network includes building the Sheppard East LRT and Eglinton East LRT lines, express bus lanes along busy TTC routes (such as Lawrence East and Finch East), signal priority for buses and three-hour TTC transfers in Scarborough.
A Scarborough Rapid Transit Network would help bring transit equity to Scarborough by:
Connecting our communities with an easy and affordable way to get ground Scarborough and help us get to work, schools, houses of worship, medical appointments, shopping centers, leisure and entertainment.
Creating new, good paying TTC operations and maintenance jobs for Scarborough residents that provide training opportunities and apprenticeships for our young people and new Canadians.
Spurring new residential and commercial developments along each rapid transit route which helps create jobs, increases walkability and accessibility, especially for seniors and those with mobility issues and makes our streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists by taking cars off the road.
Reducing long bus rides and providing residents real alternatives to driving to help reduce traffic congestion and cut harmful gas emissions greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants from vehicles.
